Bad Weather Adds Further Delays To BT installations….

Bad Weather Adds Further Delays To BT installations….

Following severe weather, including gale force winds, heavy rain and flooding that caused damage to our network, both above and below ground, Openreach declared MBORC for repair activities, in six SOM areas, on Friday 27 December 2013, in a further three areas, on Monday 30 December 2013, and in four areas from 00:01 on Tuesday 7 January 2014.

We have been working hard to recover the position in these locations and can now lift MBORC from the following areas with effect from 23:59 Thursday 9 January 2013:

Belfast and Province (Northern Ireland)

MBORC for repair activities remains in place in the following areas:

Cumbria    Mid Wales and Shrewsbury    Swansea    Truro    North Wales    East Downs
Central Downs    West Downs    Esher    Croydon    Crayford   (MBORC reference MB08504)

North East Scotland    Highlands & Islands    South West Scotland    (MBORC reference MB08444)

Exeter    Taunton    Bournemouth    Southampton    Guildford    (MBORC reference MB08487)

In all cases we have been directing available additional resource into the affected areas in order to bring the position back to normal as quickly as possible.

We will be monitoring the situation and will remove MBORC from these areas as soon as service can be restored to levels they were at immediately before the severe weather.

BT Openreach Service Update

Service update

We want to keep customers informed of the service situation across the UK now that the holiday period is coming to an end and as more extreme weather is forecast today.

Over the last two weeks high winds, heavy rain and flooding have battered the UK and this week we’ve seen more of the same, with very wet and windy conditions for many across the country on New Year’s Day and through Thursday 2 January.

The government has warned of “exceptional weather” to hit the UK today and over the weekend. The Environment Agency has issued 21 severe flood warnings – which mean “danger to life” – affecting south-west England, Gloucestershire and Wales and the Met Office has warned of flooding in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Many of the severe flood warnings relate to the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, and there is also warning of further storms through today (Friday) and into Sunday, with the potential to be “a significant weather event”, as strong winds and large waves coincide with high tides There are around 500 warnings for rain, high winds and flooding in place today.

Over the holiday period, we have seen around 20,000 more faults than our original plan with considerable damage to both above and below ground infrastructure. The fault intake is likely to increase further over the coming weekend and into next week following the severe weather and also when most businesses and consumers will have returned from their Christmas and New Year breaks.

This morning (Friday) the overall repair work stack stands at around 38,000. We expect to see this peak at around 40,000 by the middle of next week before falling to around 35,000 by next Friday.

On our current plan, we are looking at being back under 30,000, by the end of the following week, (w/c 13 January) as we recover in most areas of the country. However, Wessex, which has been the most seriously impacted region over the holiday period, saw the repair work stack peaking at a national equivalent level of 70,000, and is likely to take a little longer to recover.

As we said in the last update, the planning we put in place prior to the holiday period ensured we had people available in the field over Christmas week and even with the bank holidays and the weather difficulties, we saw over 90,000 completions.

This week we have also been stepping up to meet the challenges, with record number of engineers working over the New Year holiday and we made around 115,000 completions. Over the holiday period we have also managed to keep on-time repair at around 70%.

Next week we are fielding enough capacity to complete over 175,000 completions, but we expect that to be eroded by continued access issues to villages and towns and also the huge level of movement needed to get engineers to the hardest hit areas.

While we are in this recovery period, and as the conditions continue to be challenging, repair will obviously continue to be our main focus. In some areas of the UK we need to flex our provision lead times to ensure we bring customers back into service as quickly as possible.

With the high winds and flooding, we need to ensure safety of our people and your customers continues to take precedence.

Despite this focus on repair, lead-times for provision appointments have been held within 12 working days nationally, with ranges between 6 and 14 working days at GM patch level.

As a reminder, it would be really helpful to us if you could please make use of all electronic tracking and reporting tools, continue to highlight the Emergency Welfare process to your teams and ask your own customers to report any damage they see to our network at www.openreach.co.uk/reportdamageor www.openreach.co.uk/contactus. We will also keep you informed of any need to re-appoint your customers as part of the agreed process.

The situation is fluid and we are constantly reassessing the latest position. We will hold weekly service calls through the recovery and will issue a further update on Tuesday next week when we see the effects of the weekend storms and also as the majority of people have returned home and businesses re-opened.

Meanwhile thank you for your support over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Regards

Openreach Communications

SIP Lines Braintree

Are you looking for SIP lines in Braintree, or indeed anywhere in Essex? Colchester Telecom can help. They provide a wide range of telecoms services across Essex and beyond, including Colchester, Braintree, Chelmsford, and Ipswich. Whether you want a new telecoms system, someone to maintain your existing system or advice about headsets and handsets, they can help. And among the services they provide is support with SIP trunking.

Not sure what SIP trunking means? It’s a Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Customers equipped with SIP-based private branch exchanges (PBXs) can receive their telephone services and unified communications through this protocol from internet telephony service providers (ITSPs). These services usually include voice calls, video calls, and other applications such as web-conferencing. Colchester Telecom would be pleased to provide advice about how you can get SIP services, and what equipment you might need, and then supply and provide a maintenance contract for the equipment for you. They won’t even require a long-term contract, as their minimum contract period is just 30 days, giving you maximum flexibility with great service.

For more information, call 08000 887262, or complete the contact form on the website at here.

SIP LINES BRAINTREE

If the nature of your business means that you regularly communicate with clients both at home and abroad by telephone, a SIP connection is a worthwhile investment.

Having a SIP line means that your voice calls are made over the internet, rather than by traditional telephone cables. This cuts out costly rental charges and reduces call costs.

A SIP line also allows you to communicate by video or email, so you can use it for conference calls or, instant messaging. It’s also flexible because should your office moves from one location to another, you can take the number with you.

This means your move causes less disruption to productivity as you’re not waiting for new lines to be installed.

Reduce Your Communication Costs

Colchester Telecom is able to provide SIP lines in Braintree and all over Essex. They will carry out an on-site inspection to confirm that your PBX box is compatible with SIP trunking; this is done by carrying out two simple tests, which only take minutes to carry out. If your PBX box isn’t compatible, they then test to see if your equipment is compatible with a SIP gateway, which is an alternative method of providing the SIP service.

If you would like to talk to Colchester Telecom about installing a SIP line in Braintree, Colchester, Ipswich, or Chelmsford, contact us on 08000 887 262.

Nuisance Telephone Calls

Nuisance Telephone Calls affect most of us at some point in our lives. There’s nothing more frustrating than rushing to answer a phone only to find out that its a nuisance sales call. Consumers can opt in to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and businesses can use the Company Telephone Preference Service (CTPS) but somehow, a huge wave of calls make it over this barrier.

What is the Solution to nuisance calls?

To answer this question, we have to start with WHO is responsible for the calls in the first place. Is it government, OFCOM, call centers or the people receiving the calls (for giving their phone number out)? Or is technology to blame? If technology like auto dialers and automated outbound dialers have created the problem, then technology can surely fix the problem. With the advent of new voip and sip telephone systems, embracing all aspects of telephony technology that were once considered too expensive for most users, SPAM call filtering at a sip network level, cannot be too far away. There’s a huge amount of pressure on the broadband providers to block spam email so why not nuisance / spam telephone calls?

The “cheap” iPhone 5 is on the way… NOT!

Two new phones are being released by Apple.

Apple have been promising a new “cheap iPhone” for a while now but guess what? Its not cheap!

The new iPhone 5S looks the same as the current iPhone 5, but it’s faster processor, with a better camera, and a fingerprint scanner that lets you unlock your phone much quicker than with a password. The 5S—which comes in black, white, and gold and should sell for around £464, or possibly be free with a contract. Not that much different from last years prices.

The new “cheap” iPhone 5C (is the c for cheap?) is made of plastic instead of the aluminum found on the bigger iPhone. It comes in five colors: green, blue, yellow, pink, and white. Other than that, it’s got the same internals as the current iPhone 5; same camera, same processor, same capabilities. Indeed, the iPhone5C is so similar to the iPhone5 that Apple is discontinuing that model. The iPhone 5C will sell for £392 ish, or maybe free with a contract, but whats cheap about that? This is not a cheap phone. And if the 5C is cheaper for Apple to produce than the 5 would have been—which seems plausible given its plastic body—it might even be a way for Apple to boost its profit margins rather than produce a cheap iPhone5.

SIP Lines Braintree

Whether your business is a small start-up or an already-established organisation, you might want to consider investing in SIP trunking. It offers up a range of benefits to businesses of all sizes both in terms of money-saving potential and increased flexibility. SIP lets you run various communications over your IP network or internet connection (e.g. VoIP). In order words, it allows you to make voice calls over the space of the Internet. You’re probably asking yourself why you should be interested in SIP – after all you’ve managed quite well without it up until now. However, the benefits are plentiful. SIP can offer massive savings on calls compared to your standard telephone bills because VoIP call rates are often lower than traditional equivalents. You’ll also benefit from increased flexibility in terms of how you can use your numbers, as with SIP you can move existing numbers outside of your local exchange area.
